Description
Jantzen is a mid-century design translated into a new needlepoint

Jantzen in Sand
The Jantzen needlepoint design was inspired by the mid-century fabric of a pair of 1940’s mens bathers I bought in a charity shop. I’ve had them for over 20 years but only rediscovered them while tidying up my studio during the isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic.
I’d always thought this beautiful diamond pattern had potential for needlepoint and I’m delighted with the results of this hand painted design.
The Jantzen brand is synonymous with Australian beaches, but after a little research I learnt that it is in fact an American brand, brought to Australia by American soldiers on R&R during World War 2.
A factory was later set up in Australia in the 1940’s. These bathers proudly display a “Made in Australia” label so I think they must have been made around that time.

A mid-century classic
While this design was inspired by mid-century fabric, the beautiful mix of vibrant colours and geometric shapes are a perfect combination for contemporary interiors.
