Needlepoint design with men in mind

Men too

Close-up of Collins Street in ochre

At every market and trade show I’ve chatted with men who enjoy the experience of needlepoint. Many of them complain they can’t find designs they’d like to stitch for themselves.

With Father’s Day next month, I thought it might be time to remind us all that men like to stitch too! Indeed they have played a significant role in making the craft of needlepoint more popular than ever.

My well worn copy

Most notably is the extraordinary Kaffe Fassett who brought his wonderful gift of colour and exciting new subject matter to the craft. His diverse interests and eccentric subject matter  appealed to men and women; young and old; traditional and contemporary tastes, and made stitching needlepoint hip and trendy! No small task.

Collins Street

My latest hand painted design, Collins Street was designed with men in mind. A design a man might choose to stitch or as a finished gift for a man and his favourite chair.

The first colour way I stitches was in pink, which may not be for every man but I have since added a number of other colours.

The gift of “Flow”

If you do needlepoint you are likely to have experienced what positive psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi describes as flow which is  “a state of concentration or complete absorption with the activity at hand and the situation. It is a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter.”

Neuroscientists are beginning to understand how the activity of some crafts can lead us to mindfulness, meditation and the experience of “flow.”

Research shows craft practices like needlepoint:

  • improve depression
  • help anxiety
  • improve coping behaviours in the face of adversity
  • improve quality of life
  • significantly reduce stress

All vital for maintaining brain health and well-being.

Needlepoint does all that and you get a beautiful needlepoint cushion as well!

Share the joy needlepoint with someone you love and you’ll both enjoy the benefits.

Happy stitching, Barbara
