On a recent holiday to Tasmania I set out to find the textile treasures of this magic island.
It was a wonderful holiday made more wonderful by the healthy textile industry of mills, markets, and beautiful shops, catering to a wide range of traditional and contemporary needlework. It made me realise how poorly served we are here in Adelaide.
First stop Bruny Island
On arrival in Hobart we hired a car and headed south to Bruny Island. You get to the island by ferry. The island has a spectacular coastline with gums growing to the edge of the beaches. I was delighted to find the R-T Cafe, in Alonnah, which also served as a meeting spot for locals to share and learn new crafts, some of which were used to raise money for various local charities. A must see if you visit Bruny.
Next post we see what Hobart has to offer. In the meantime Happy stitching!
